There were 18 witnesses at a two-day hearing on several petroleum-related issues, including the security of US energy supplies in view of the long-term world supply and demand outlook, the increase in imports of petroleum products, and proposals for oil and gas tax reforms. Two areas of concern were the vulnerability that a rising dependence upon imports imposes and the impact on soil production of the proposed tax simplification. The witnesses, who represented consumers, the petroleum industry, trade and commerce agencies, economists, and other interest groups, gave a range of responses in each area. Letters and statements submitted for the record and two appendices follow their testimony.
