Annealing of neutron damage in graphite irradiated and stored at room temperature.

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6317409· OSTI ID:6317409
Annealing of neutron radiation damage in graphite at the same temperature at which it was irradiated is reported. Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples were irradiated to fluences in the range 0.44 to 153 x 10/sup 15//cm/sup 2/ at room temperature using three different neutron sources with average energies of 1.5, 5.5, and 15 MeV, respectively. Following these irradiations, the C/sub 44/ elastic constants of the samples were measured several times over periods up to two years during which time sample temperatures never exceeded 30/sup 0/C. The C/sub 44/ constants were observed to slowly decrease toward their unirradiated values with up to 40% of the irradiation-induced changes eventually annealing out.
