The luminescence of spectral lines of the Q branches of the first four diagonal bands in Fulcher's ..cap alpha.. system (d/sup 3/Pi/sup -//sub u/..-->.. a/sup 3/..sigma../sup +//sub g/), excited by an electron beam of adjustable energy epsilon-c = 0--100 eV, has been studied. Liquid nitrogen cooling of the electron gun made it possible to find the cross sections for electronic-rotational excitation of the d/sup 3/Pi/sup -//sub u/, v levels from the X/sup 1/..sigma../sup +//sub g/, v/sub 0/ = 0 ground state of orthohydrogen. It was noted that the relative cross sections of rotational transitions depend on the vibrational quantum number in the final state for excitation. This must be considered when determining the gas temperature from the distribution of intensity in the rotational structure of the molecular bands emitted by a low pressure plasma.
