Production of electronically excited N[sub 2][sup +] ions by electron impact on N[sub 2] molecules
- Department of Physics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706 (United States)
Measurements of the optical emission cross sections for the N[sub 2][sup +] [ital D][sup 2] [Pi][sub [ital g]][r arrow][ital A] [sup 2][Pi][sub [ital u]] emission bands produced by electron impact on N[sub 2] are reported. From these optical data, estimates of the apparent cross sections for the electron-impact production of N[sub 2][sup +] ([ital D] [sup 2][Pi][sub [ital g]]) in the vibrational states [ital v]=4, 7, and 9 are obtained. Combining these data with similar cross sections for the [sup 2][Pi][sub u][r arrow]X [sup 2][Sigma][sub g][sup +] and [sup 2][Sigma][sub u][sup +][r arrow]X [sup 2][Sigma][sub g][sup +] bands and with ionization cross sections of N[sub 2] enables us to analyze the systematics of the cross sections for producing N[sub 2][sup +] in the [ital X] [sup 2][Sigma][sub g][sup +], [ital A] [sup 2][Pi][sub u], [sup 2][Sigma][sub u][sup +], and [ital D] [sup 2][Pi][sub g] states. Two different kinds of excitation behaviors are found and are discussed in reference to the electronic structure of the N[sub 2][sup +] ion.
