Prompt single muon production by protons on iron
A new experiment has been performed at Fermilab to measure the hadronic production of prompt single muons. A preliminary analysis of a sample of the data indicates approximately equal production of prompt single ..mu../sup +/'s and ..mu../sup -/'s in 350 GeV p-Fe interactions. The observed momentum distributions of prompt single ..mu../sup +/'s and ..mu../sup -/'s can satisfactorily be fit by the hypothesis of central production of D mesons with a cross section of 16 +- 4 ..mu..b/nucleon.
