Hadronic production of prompt single muons

Results from a prompt single muon search at Fermilab are reported. Prompt l..mu../sup +/ and l..mu../sup -/ production from 400 GeV protons on iron was observed at approximately equal levels. Charm models of DD production predict l..mu../sup -//l..mu../sup +/approx. =0.9, from differences in trigger efficiency. The observed ratio was 1.3 +- 0.3. Total charm cross sections of 20--90 ..mu..b/nucleon were calculated, assuming linear A dependence, for correlated and uncorrelated DD production. Upper limits on diffractive production ..lambda../sub c/-D pairs were set.
