Anaerobic bioconversion of one-carbon compounds

Conference · · Dev. Ind. Microbiol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6313546
Recently, several anaerobic, acidogenic bacteria that have the ability to utilize one-carbon compounds, such as CO, CO2/H2, and methanol, have been isolated. Strains of Butyribacterium methylotrophicum, Eubacterium limosum (B. rettgeri), Clostridium thermoaceticum, and Clostridium thermoautrotrophicum have exhibited growth on CO as the sole carbon and energy source. The ability of these microorganisms to produce longer chain reduced products from C1 substrates has enhanced the scopes of biotechnology for the production of fuels and chemicals. In this paper the proposed pathways of C1 metabolism are reviewed and the scope of these bioconversions are discussed. 27 references, 2 figures, 3 tables.
