Acidogenic bioconversion of C/sub 1/ compounds

Conference · · Biotechnol. Bioeng. Symp.; (United States)

Anaerobic bioconversion of methanol and CO by Butyribacterium methylotrophicum is discussed. B. methylotrophicum can ferment methanol heterotrophically, and a metabolic mutant (CO strain) can ferment CO autotrophically, producing acetic and butyric acids as reduced metabolic end products. Batch fermentation data show that product formation occurs due to both growth and maintenance energy requirement, and carbon flow to cells or products can be manipulated by changing ratios of carbon sources in the medium. These organisms are very efficient both for formation of end products and synthesizing cell mass. Major improvements in rates of bioconversion and concentration of products are needed, and development of economical and efficient product recovery processes are required before commercial applications can be developed. 2 figures, 2 tables.
