Duality symmetry in orbifolds and effective low-energy Lagrangians

Spacetime duality is studied in the untwisted sectors of symmetric (2,2) {ital Z}{sub {ital N}} orbifolds. The generating functional for {ital S}-matrix amplitudes is shown to be invariant under duality transformations of the background fields corresponding to moduli and non-Abelian matter scalars. Duality symmetry greatly restricts the possible forms of the low-energy effective Lagrangian. The most general such Lagrangian is constructed.
