A hearing on H.R. 935, which would disband the Synthetic Fuels Corporation (SNF), brought testimony from representatives of the synthetic fuels industry on how best to restructure federal policies affecting synthetic fuels. The impetus for the bill was an effort by the administration to reduce the federal deficit, but the reassessment must consider US energy vulnerability and the lessons learned during the 1970s. At issue was the performance and management of the SNF, the federal role and best level of funding in synfuels development, where financial assistance would be most effective, and the appropriate institutional structure. The hearing record includes the text of H.R. 935, background material and discussion submitted for the record, and the testimony of nine witnesses.
