Centrifuging FGD sludge can eliminate thickening step

This paper presents alternative methods to using thickeners in flue-gas-desulfurization (FGD) processes. Centrifuges are discussed as one alternative, since they offer more flexibility in handling variable inlet conditions and can operate without the upstream thickener, saving capital costs and reducing operating and maintenance requirements. This article examines an evaluation conducted by Plains Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative. Dewatering alternatives were examined during the design phase of its Escalante station, which led to the first single-stage-dewatering system designed and installed for a U.S. utility.
