A unique downhole packer and tool assembly has been used successfully to cement a 4-1/2-in. liner over 200 ft of open hole thief zone, above 170 ft of enlarged, nitro-shot pay. The downhole assembly is illustrated. The key provisions of the system are as follows: (1) an open hole packer hydraulically set with internal pressure; (2) a double packoff around the cementing stringer to isolate cementing ports to set packer; (3) a special telescoping, J-lock joint to lengthen tail pipe for closing cementing ports after the job; (4) special application of a standard float collar--it was run upside down--to hold internal pressure; and (5) the tool design allows operator to check, and positively test, each step before proceeding. After cementing with 60 sacks and drilling out plugs, the pay zone was fractured in 3 stages. Temperature logs showed no communication to the former problem section. Subsequent production was increased significantly. The method of operation and the job results are described in detail.
