For the first time in the history of the Permian basin a drain hole is going to be drilled. Only a handful ever have been drilled in the US. It is simply a horizontal hole drilled into a formation from a vertical well bore. Reportedly, it will increase net pay, improve sweep efficiency of a flood and prevent coning. Using a whipstock and flexible drill collars, Arco proposes to drill a 6000-ft hole then kick-out from vertical to horizontal in approx. 15 ft. The horizontal well bore will be drilled 200 ft into the heart of the pay. The drain hole will be completed open hole and the entire interval will be acidized, using coiled tubing and a packer set in the straight hole. There will be no production equipment in the drain hole. Arco's drain hole is designed to reduce gas coning. The idea is to increase the area of the well bore and thus reduce pressure in it.
