The effect of fuel sulfur content on the corrosion, oxidation, and sulfidation of two nickel base chromium alloys used for the blades of gas turbine engines--alloys EI-99 and EI-602--was evaluated. The comparative susceptibility of alloy constituents such as aluminum, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, cobalt, and titanium to form sulfides and oxides at operating temperatures in the presence of combustion products was determined. Corrosion rate as a function of temperature was also established for the alloys and their components. Alloy compositions are tabulated and results are graphed for sulfur content against corrosion rate.
