Investigation of the ice regime of a stretch of the Daugava river under regulated conditions

The rise of water levels of the Daugava River caused by ice dams and jams was determined mainly by the volume of shuga and ice accumulating on the jam-hazardous stretch and depended on the water discharges in the river. It was shown that with the construction of the Daugavpils hydrostation the maximum volume of shuga and ice decreases in the jam-hazardous stretch by 50% and that the height of the maximum rises of the levels caused by dams and jams will not exceed 6.8 m under conditions of normal operation. This means that Daugavpils hydrostation flooding of the territory as a result of water level rise due to ice jams will not occur in its lower pool. To control ice dams and jams a bypass could be constructed for draining water and for lowering the water levels caused by ice dams and jams.
