After the second shock: pragmatic energy strategies

Revolution in Iran has brought oil production and supply interruptions comparable to those following the 1973 embargo and has dramatized U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern producers. Romanticisms and self-interest complicate the continued U.S. debate over fuel strategies, which are more in need of a pragmatic study of the alternatives to imported oil. A balanced program is proposed, one which calls for government leadership rather than management. Financial incentives for the untested alternatives of conservation and solar energy are economically feasible and would cause less disruption than over-production of fossil and nuclear fuels.
