Spin alignment of rho/sub 0/(770) mesons produced in K/sup -/p and pp interactions at 32 GeV/c

The spin alignment of rho/sup 0/ mesons produced inclusively in K/sup -/p and p-barp interactions at 32 GeV/c is studied. The distributions of particles produced in the decay of the rho/sup 0/ in the cosine of the angle theta/sub N/ with respect to the normal to the reaction plane in the resonance rest frame are reconstructed. It is found that the value of the element rho/sup N//sub 00/ of the spin-density matrix in this reference frame is consistent with the assumption that the rho/sup 0/(770) spin is not aligned in these two types of reaction. The effect of the form of parametrization of the background curve used to approximate the distributions M(..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/) in various ranges of cos theta/sub N/ on the form of the distribution in cos theta/sub N/ is studied.
