Structure of an excited weakly ionized plasma with a discontinuously moving neutral component

The structure of plane ion-sound waves of finite amplitude maintained in a weakly ionized plasma by a shock wave in the neutral component is studied theoretically. The two cases of a nonisothermal gas plasma with T/sub e/>>T/sub i/> or approx. =T/sub n/ and a plasma in solids with a degenerate electron component are considered. It is shown that forced interaction of neutral particles with the charged component results in ion--neutral friction and produces an excitation in the charged plasma component similar to a shock wave, with leading edge width much greater than the free path lengths of the ions and neutral particles.
