Diffraction dissociation /sup 12/C. -->. 3. cap alpha. in nuclear emulsion at 4. 5 GeV/c per nucleon

We have measured the distributions of transverse momenta and correlation characteristics of ..cap alpha.. particles from diffraction dissociation of relativistic /sup 12/C nuclei into three ..cap alpha.. particles. These characteristics are compared with the corresponding ones in ''ordinary'' fragmentation of the residual incident nuclei in inelastic collisions, and the possibility of extracting intranuclear characteristics of nucleon clusters from experiments on fragmentation of relativistic nuclei is discussed.
