Oil and gas developments in Louisiana Gulf Coast offshore in 1983

In 1983, offshore Louisiana had 1008 wells drilled, a decrease of 25 wells from 1982. The overall success rate decreased 2.6% to (62.5%) from 1982. The success rate for wildcats decreased to 21.2%, with 38 new-field discoveries. The success rate for new-pool and outpost drilling decreased to 47.1%, with 32 discoveries. At Federal Lease Sale 72 on May 25, 1983, the first area-wide federal lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico, a record $4.58 billion was bid on 656 leases by 80 companies. The total of accepted winning bids on 623 tracts (3,089,872 acres) was $3.37 billion. Geophysical activity decreased to 1220 crew-weeks, down 13% from 1982.
