Oil and gas developments in Louisiana Gulf Coast offshore in 1984

In 1984 in offshore Louisiana, 1145 wells were drilled, an increase of 137 wells from 1983. The overall success rate increased to 63.9% in 1984 from 62.5% in 1983. The success rate for wildcats increased to 25.5%, with 65 new-field discoveries. The success rate for new-pool and outpost drilling increased to 59.6%, with 34 discoveries. A deep-water drilling boom along the Flexure trend led to a number of significant oil discoveries with estimated reserves of more than 1 billion bbl of oil equivalent. At Federal Lease Sale 81 on April 1984, $2.13 billion was bid on 529 leases by 80 companies. The total of accepted winning birds on 452 tracts (2,272,369 ac) was $1.32 billion. Geophysical activity fell 7% from 1983 to 1133 crew-weeks, while liquids and gas production rose 10% and 13%, respectively. 2 figures, 6 tables.
