Line sizing is an integral and fundamental step of any plant design or revamp project each engineering group has its own sizing criteria. Some are based on fluid velocity. Others prefer to use criteria based on pressure drop per 100 feet of pipe. Simplified equations and graphs are derived to estimate optimum pipe size for liquid flow, based on minimum operating and capital costs. The system is set at pump discharge conditions, but the results can also be applied to any liquid lines that minimize pressure drop. The paper describes the problem; derivation; operating costs; and results. Other cases are briefly mentioned.
