Experimental and theoretical study of condensation in multicomponent vapors: Quarterly report No. 9 for 15 February 1986-14 May 1986

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6291822

The program is primarily experimental, but a significant amount of supporting theoretical work is also being performed. The experiments are studying the homogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth of mixed clusters formed during the supersonic expansion of gas mixtures containing pairs of mutually condensible species. Theoretical work is concentrating on the calculation of nucleation rates under conditions pertinent to the experiments. A new thermodynamic model for binary cluster composition is being used as a basis for a revised classical theory of binary nucleation rates. Rates calculated with this revised theory, as well as with the standard theory and other existing theories, are being compared with the supersonic expansion data and with data obtained from diffusion cloud chambers and shock tubes to assess adequacy of the various theories. This report covers recent theoretical work on the thermodynamic consistency of binary nucleation theories. 12 refs., 1 fig.
