Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of 2-ethylhexanol in presence of cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate
It was shown for a number of aliphatic alcohols that oxidative conversion may be achieved with satisfactory selectivity by oxidation by molecular oxygen in presence of cobalt salts in considerably higher concentrations than are generally used. This paper is concerned with an examination of the part played by cobalt compounds under such process conditions. 2-Ethylhexanol was chosen for the investigation. It was found that during oxidation of 2-ethylhexanol at 90/sup 0/ in presence of cobalt 2-ethylheanoate the reaction of the latter in the highest valence state with the original alcohol and the intermediate 2-ethylhexanal largely determines the process rate. Formation of new active centers during oxidation of 2-ethylhexanol under the conditions studied probably proceeds by interaction of the Co(II) compound with oxygen and the substrate.
