By use of a relative rate technique, rate constants have been determined for the gas-phase reactions of the NO/sub 3/ radical with a series of organic species at 296 +/- 2 K. A step-ladder approach in which the relative reactivities of pairs of organic compounds, with the relative reactivities being within a factor of approx. 5, were determined was used to obtain rate constants for a series of alkanes and alkenes previously used as reference compounds in relative rate studies. By use of a literature rate constant for the reaction of NO/sub 3/ radicals with trans-2-butene of (3.87 +/- 0.45) x 10/sup -13/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, the following rate constants for these compounds were obtained (in cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ units): n-heptane, (1.36 +/- 0.21) x 10/sup -16/; 2,3-dimethylbutane, (4.06 +/- 0.57) x 10/sup -16/; ethene, (2.14 +/- 0.32) x 10/sup -16/; propene, (9.40 +/- 1.19) x 10/sup -15/; 2-methyl-2-butene, (9.33 +/- 1.18) x 10/sup -12/; and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, (5.69 +/- 0.73) x 10/sup -11/. These data allow previous relative rate constant ratio data to be placed on an absolute basis and a self-consistent set of room temperature NO/sub 3/ radical reaction rate constants to be presented for tropospheric chemistry purposes.
