Rate constants for the gas-phase reactions of the NO/sub 3/ radical with ethylbenzene, benzyl chloride, tetralin, 1,4-benzodioxan, and 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran have been determined at 298 +/- 2 K, with a relative rate technique. By use of rate constants for the reactions of NO/sub 3/ radicals with propene and trans-2-butene of (7.5 +/- 1.6) x 10/sup -15/ and (3.8 +/- 0.4) x 10/sup -13/ cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/, respectively, the following rate constants (in cm/sup 3/ molecule/sup -1/ s/sup -1/ units) were obtained: ethylbenzene, less than or equal to6 x 10/sup -16/; benzyl chloride, <6 x 10/sup -16/; tetralin, (8.8 +/- 2.6) x 10/sup -15/; 1,4-benzodioxan, (4.7 +/- 2.5) x 10/sup -16/; 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, (1.1 +/- 0.3) x 10/sup -13/. These rate constants are compared with the literature data for NO/sub 3/ radical reactions with other aromatic compounds and the mechanistic implications discussed. On the basis of these data, the gas-phase reactions of the NO/sub 3/ radical with dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran and their chlorinated and brominated homologues will be of negligible importance as an atmospheric removal process. 23 references, 1 figure, 1 table.
