Effect of. gamma. -radiation on the properties of a cellulose nitrate detector

Journal Article · · High Energy Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6289310
The ..gamma..radiolysis of cellulose nitrate at 77 K has been studied by EPR. The principal radical products are NO/sup 2/ radicals and polymeric radicals isolated for the first time, whose concentration at 300 K does not exceed 2% of the total concentration of radicals measured at 77 K. It has been established that the accelerations of alkaline etching of ..gamma..-irradiated cellulose nitrate films is associated with the destruction of the macromolecular chains, caused not only by direct radiation but also by active sites which are formed as a result of radiation-chemical reactions. The average dose in a track (approx.250 kGy) and the track diameter (2-4 nm) are estimated for 2.8 MeV ..cap alpha..-particles.
