The results of blast furnace smeltings were analyzed statistically and established that the sulfur content of the cast iron is a function of the sulfur content in the coke. A mathematical expression was derived. Laboratory batch coking experiments demonstrated the possibility of producing a 0.41% low sulfur coal coke. Production of low sulfur coke may be achieved principally by redistribution of coal types at the coal yard. In the present technological regime of blast furnace operation the use of coke with sulfur content of 0.41% will improve the quality of the cast iron (the sulfur content will decrease to 0.015% and improve the technical economic operating indices). 4 figures, 4 tables.
