Pipelines continue to lead all other forms of transport in tonnage movement of oil in 1980 but water carriers lead in ton-miles

Included in this study for the ninth year is a comparison of the ton-miles of crude petroleum and petroleum products carried in domestic transportation by the various modes of transport. The total ton-mileage of crude petroleum and petroleum products for 1980 was 1,232.9 billion, of which 46.71 percent was transported by pipelines, 50.12 percent by water carriers, 2.17 percent by motor carriers, and 1.00 percent by railroads. Pipelines carried 47.3 percent of the total 740.9 billion ton miles of crude petroleum transported. Pipelines accounted for 45.8 percent of the 492.0 billion ton miles of petroleum products transported in 1980.
