This article concerns the annual report of The Association of Oil Pipe Lines showing the shifts in petroleum transportation that have occurred between the years 1972-1981. Crude petroleum and petroleum products carried in domestic transportation by the various modes of transportation in 1981 totalled, 1,218.4 billion ton-miles, of which 46.27% was transported by pipelines, 50.66% by water carriers, 2.04% by motor carriers and 1.03% by railroads. For 1980, 1,245.3 billion ton-miles, 47.24% was carried by pipelines, 49.61% by water carriers, 2.15% by motor carriers and 1.00% by railroads. In the movement in 1981, of crude petroleum only, the pipelines carried 45.0% of the total 740.7 billion ton-miles transported compared to 48.2% in 1980. The water carriers transported 54.6% of the total crude ton-miles transported in 1981 compared to 51.4% in 1980. The ton-mileage of crude and petroleum products carried by pipelines in 1981 was down 4.2% from 1980. This compares with a decrease of 2.2% in total ton-mile movements for all modes of transportation during the same period. 3 tables. (DP)
