This patent describes a catalyst suitable for the metathesis of an olefin having the formula: M(NR/sup 1/)(OR/sup 2/)/sub 2/(CHR/sup 3/) wherein: R/sup 1/ and R/sup 2/ are alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, haloalkyl, haloaryl, haloaralkyl or a silicon-containing analog; and R/sup 3/ is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or a substituent resulting from the reaction of the M=CHR/sup 3/ moiety of the catalyst with an olefin metathesized and where M is Mo or W.
