This patent describes a catalyst composition for the polymerization of olefins comprising: (A) an aromatic hydrocarbon solution of mixed aluminium hydrocarbyl-Lewis base co-catalyst composition comprising (I) at least two different classes of aluminum hydrocarbyls: an aluminium hydrocarbyl halide or mixture of aluminum hydrocarbyl halides, and one of an aluminum hydrocarbyl hydride, aluminum trialkyl or mixtures thereof, the hydrocarbyl radical can be an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and at least one Lewis base represented by a formula. Each Y can be -OR', -NR/sub 2/ or R' with the proviso that at least two be -OR' or -NR/sub 2/, Z is an alkylene radical forming a 5 or 6 membered ring with the carbonyldioxy group or Z is alkyl substituted alkylene group. The alkyl radical has from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R is an aryl, allyl or arkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, (b) a group 4b, 5b, 6b, or 8 transition metal compound.
