The reaction of perfluoropropyl(tetracarbonyl)iron iodide with silver fluoroborate leads to the formation of a cationic complex, which is converted into the carbonyl chloride or bromide by the action of R/sub 4/N/sup +/Hlg/sup -/ (Hlg = Cl, Br) and gives bis(perfluoropropyl)tetracarbonyl iron, i.e., the product from the symmetricization of the carbonyl fluoride, with sources of fluoride ion (Me/sub 2/NCH/sub 2/F, (Me/sub 2/N)/sub 3/CF).
