This work is part of the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE), an international land-surface-atmosphere experiment aimed at improving the way climate models represent energy, water, heat, and carbon exchanges, and improving the utilization of satellite based remote sensing to monitor such parameters. This paper provides an overview of the following papers which are part of the surface flux measurements group effort during the l987 and 1989 campaigns. A variety of sensors were used to monitor fluxes of heat, moisture, radiation, momentum, and several radiatively active trace gases. In l987 there were 22 stations at 20 sites, and in 1989 there were 13 instrumented sites. There were two main goals for the surface flux group. First was to obtain a detailed record of all relevant fluxes, collected at half hour intervals over the FIFE site, and second was to interpret the time and space variability of these fluxes, and relate this to the problem of modeling such fluxes on an area-averaged basis.
