This work is part of the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE), an international land-surface-atmosphere experiment aimed at improving the way climate models represent energy, water, heat, and carbon exchanges, and improving the utilization of satellite based remote sensing to monitor such parameters. The authors present analysis of energy budgets in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) during grid flights over the site in l987. The results show that the aircraft data underestimate the surface fluxes of sensible and latent heat fluxes from ground measurements, though better calibrations have decreased the difference from previous work. The difference appears to be consistent with a bias from the high-pass filtering of the aircraft data, and the 15km length of the FIFE flight legs. This work also confirms that entrainment at the top of the ABL over FIFE is roughly double the value used in simple dry mixed layer models.
