Photovoltaic/thermal collectors and heat pumps

A simple solar-heating system comprised of an idealized heat pump and photovaltaic/thermal energy collectors is described and its performance characteristics analyzed. The mathematical model expresses the system's heating capacity as a function of insolation, ambient air temperature, and thermal-energy storage temperature. Using a closed-form solution, the system's overall efficiency is presented and compared to the efficiency of a conventional solar-heating system.
