New Fairbanks facility produces high volume of insulated pipes

An insulation system consisting of cellular plastic (polyurethane foam) covered with a spiral-lock galvanized sheet metal jacket is described. Each pipe joint has a 9-in. cutback at each end to permit field welding without damage to the coating. Field insulation kits are used to cover the welded joints after welding. Design of the system permits transfer loads at supports and anchors, as well as loads resulting from the environment at the Alaskan North Slope. Insulated pipe is required to maintain constant temperature of fluids carried in pipe, to prevent water lines from freezing, and to prevent heat loss.
