With large diameter foam insulated pipe lines, the engineer must contend with a major shortcoming of foam insulation - the severe problems associated with field bending large diameter pipe. Bending foam insulated pipe will result in inevitable localized insulation damage. Minimizing this damage while achieving good quality pipe bends, will require proper choice of physical properties for both insulation and jacket, bending machine improvements and a realistic appraisal of standards for bend quality.
