In 1981, active solar systems generated sales of about $600 million nationwide. However, by the fourth quarter the recession was beginning to affect the industry. During 1982 many dealers and installers went out of business. Modest growth in sales was seen in large volume installers who have been in business for a long time and who have overcome credibility problems. The industry believes that long-term growth will require continuation of tax incentives, effective consumer financing techniques and heightened public awareness of solar energy. (JMT)
