Syncrude may delay completion of expansion

Syncrude Canada Ltd has said that it may delay for one year the balance of a $750 million expansion program at its Fort McMurray, Alta, oil sands plants. The company says it needs loans or loan guarantees to complete the project because of low oil prices. Syncrude has spent about $400 million on the expansion program that began in 1983 and was to be completed in 1988. The project will increase capacity to about 140,000 b/d from 120,000 b/d. Alberta is reviewing Syncrude proposals for financial aid. Syncrude also has asked for assistance from the federal government for the expansion program.
