Curtiss-Wright Power Systems is currently engaged in a 5-year multiphase R and D program for the US Dept. of Energy, which is directed toward the combustion of high-sulfur coal in a pressurized-fluidized-bed combustor in a combined-cycle power plant. The program requires the design of a modular 500-MW combined-cycle power-generation plant using a coal-fired PFB during the first phase of the contract. Ensuing phases include the design, construction, and operation of a 13-MW gas-turbine pilot plant. The company is also engaged in a second multiphase program for DOE that involves the development of high-temperature turbine technology for use in gas turbines burning coal derived from low-Btu gas or coal liquid in a combined-cycle power-generation system.
