A program to design, construct, and operate a pilot plant using a pressurized fluidized-bed (PFB) combustor is proceeding under US Dept. of Energy sponsorpship. The PFB's ability to burn high-sulfur coal in an environmentally acceptable manner and to produce electricity at competitive costs is the major reason for the program. The pilot plant, which will produce 13 MW, will address some key technical issues associated with the development of the PFB gas turbine. Performance and reliability of the PFB heat exchanger, the hot-gas cleanup system, and the gas turbine will be evaluated.
