The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) sponsors research into the effects of long-term exposure to electric and magnetic fields. Questions during the past decade over the possibility of subtle biologic effects and recent experiments indicating that even low-level fields may affect biochemical activity of some body tissue have come to the forefront because of utility needs to build very high voltage transmission lines. Early research results suggest that routine exposure is not a health hazard, but more specific data are needed. The research is complicated by the differences in effects caused by individual posture, surroundings, and variations in frequencies in any given conducting field. The article describes animal experiments underway on cell biology and epidemiology. 2 references, 7 figures.
