Selective population of stretched high-spin states in the (d,. cap alpha. ) reaction

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6264019
Recent experimental investigations of the (d, ..cap alpha..) reaction on target nuclei between A = 40 and 64 with 80 MeV vector polarized deuterons have shown an extremely strong selectivity for exciting ((target) x (1f/sub 7/2/)/sup -2/ /sub J //sub = //sub 7/) configuration high-spin states in the final nuclei. The transitions to such states are characterised by L = 6 angular distributions of the differential cross section and typical J = 7 patterns of the vector analyzing power. Their location and their transition strength in the (d, ..cap alpha..) reaction on the even Ni-isotopes is used to critically test predictions from shell model calculations. On the even Ca-isotopes, this strong and systematic selectivity is employed to determine the extent of proton core excitations in their ground state wave functions.
