Proton ground-state correlations in /sup 48/Ca

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Differential cross-section and vector analyzing-power angular distributions of the reaction /sup 48/Ca(d/sub pol/,..cap alpha..) /sup 46/K at E/sub d/ = 79.4 MeV unambiguously reveal J/sup ..pi../ = 7/sup +/ transitions to states at 4.54 and 5.95 MeV in /sup 46/K, the latter of which is quite strong. Such transitions result from the pickup of a stretched (1f/sub 7/2/)= 7,T = 0/sup 2/ configuration proton-neutron pair. A comparison of strength to the 7/sup +/ transition in /sup 50/Ti (d,..cap alpha..) /sup 48/Sc (1.10 MeV) implies a relatively large 1f/sub 7/2/ proton occupation number of 0.65 +- 0.20 for the /sup 48/Ca ground state.
