Differential cross sections and vector analysing powers for states in 46K have been measured via the /sup 48/Ca(d,..cap alpha..) reaction for E/sub d/ = 79.1 MeV at 6/sup 0/ to 35/sup 0//sub lab/. The purpose of this study was to examine the structure of /sup 46/K and the (d,..cap alpha..) reaction mechanism. The measurements were made using the atomic beam polarized ion source in conjunction with the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and the QDDM spectrograph. The deuteron beam was measured using a /sup 3/He polarimeter and the data acquisition was accomplished using the program DERIVE. Typically the vector polarization of the beam was 0.65 with a beam intensity of 50 nA. Several new states have been found in /sup 46/K in the region of 5.90 MeV excitation energy. The code DWUCKV was used to assign tentative 1-transfer values to these states. Two particular reaction mechanisms were examined; the sequential transfer mechanism and the one step mechanism including the d-state of the ..cap alpha.. particle. No evidence was found to support the sequential transfer hypothesis. Including the d-state of the ..cap alpha.. particle improved the fits to some of the states examined and is of some importance.
