Proved reserves of the United States as of year-end 1979

Although proved US gas reserves continue to decline - from 200.3 trillion CF in 1978 to 194.9 TCF in 1979 - they are beginning to show signs of recovery from the decline that began in 1971. Annual reserve additions were at the highest level since the inclusion of Prudhoe Bay reserves in 1970. Reserve additions have been over 10 TCF for 4 of the past 5 years. Furthermore, nonassociated-gas reserve additions were at their second highest level in 11 years. Net production has been essentially constant for the past 5 years and increased slightly in 1979 to 19.9 TCF. These signs of stabilization and an upturn in reserve additions and production may be an indication that the increased gas-well drilling activity of the past few years is beginning to have an effect. If so, further improvements can be expected under the more favorable drilling climate resulting from the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978.
