Good news from the oil and gas hunt

Journal Article · · Fortune; (United States)

Given ingenuity, money, and access to promising areas, the current drilling boom will continue to improve the ratio of hydrocarbon reserves added to those pumped and thereby help reduce imports over the next 10 years while the country develops alternative energy sources. Much of the explorationist's enthusiasm is focused on the Rocky Mountains, particularly the Overthrust Belt, which could yield up to 50 trillion CF of gas. In most cases, hydrocarbon discoveries contain a growing proportion of gas rather than oil (Conoco Inc.'s 1979 reserves additions were mostly gas), and by all accounts gas production will be easier to stabilize than oil production. Last year's gas-reserves addition of 14.3 TCF was the highest figure since the 1970 Prudhoe Bay discoveries and the 5.7 TCF reserves decline the smallest since 1970.
