Electronic structure of Pb/sub 1-x/Eu/sub x/Te alloys

The band structure of Pb/sub 1-x/Eu/sub x/Te is predicted using an empirical tight-binding scheme similar to that of Vogl et al. (1) for III-V semiconductors. The tight-binding parameters of PbTe (2) are extrapolated to predict those of EuTe, using scaling rules. The possibility that the alloy Pb/sub 1-x/Eu/sub x/Te might provide visible lasers is discussed, and the band structures to be expected are reviewed.
