Dravo Cogeneration, a subsidiary of Gibbs and Hill, will market cogeneration and act as a consultant to utilities and industry on the planning and operation of viable cogeneration schemes. Cogeneration offers a utility a four-fold benefit in (1) its environmental and social acceptance of expansion plans, (2) potential new business from industrial customers, (3) increased acceptance by the financial community, and (4) a significant contribution to our present energy problems. In a scheme analogous to its standard reference nuclear and coal-fired plant designs, G and H has evolved a reference cogeneration plant. Any near-term alternate fuel (lignite, coal, coal-derived liquid, etc.) should be used in such a large scale facility to afford (1) economies of scale, (2) financial leverage, (3) conservation of corporate capital, (4) provisions for expansion, and (5) by-product electricity. In short, by combining the energy requirements of several industrial users, all of these five advantages can be realized in a practical and economical manner. Schematics, charts, and tables are presented to follow a case history for the Houston Power and Light Co.--Union Carbide venture. (MCW)
